Vermont Wind ResourceVermont's WInd Resource

The New England Wind Map
The New England Wind Map is for all of New England, but zooming into any part of Vermont is possible. This is currently the most accurate wind map available for the state of Vermont.

State Funded Wind Assesment
An older wind assessment was completed in 1999. The Department of Public Service together with Green Mountain Power Corporation, NRG Systems and Vermont Environmental Research Associates, Inc. (VERA) conducted a wind resource assessment for Vermont. The goal of this project was to gather wind resource data which would further the development of wind energy projects in the state. This project conducted measurements at four sites throughout the state that were representative of the wind resource needed for commercial wind developments. The measurement sites were geographically and topographically dispersed.

There were four data collection sites in this project. You can view a table of the monthly mean wind speed, a graph of the diurnal mean wind speed, and a wind energy rose for the first three sites listed below.
1. Mt. Mansfield (elev. ~4,000 ft.) in central Vermont
Monthly mean wind speed
Diurnal mean wind speed
Wind energy rose

2. Burke Mountain (~3,000 ft.) in Northeast Vermont
Monthly mean wind speed
Diurnal mean wind speed
Wind energy rose

3. Grandpa's Knob (~2,000 ft.) near Rutland Vermont
Monthly mean wind speed
Diurnal mean wind speed
Wind energy rose

4. Searsburg (~2,800 ft.) in Southern Vermont

The graphic to the right is a wind resource map developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory with the data collected by this project. To view a larger version of the map (217kb), click here.
